Q. What should I bring to class?
A. Bring a water bottle, a small towel and a lot of enthusiasm.
If you require any special medications such as a asthma enhaler nring it along and inform your instructor prior to the class.
Q. What should I wear to class?
A. Wear something comfortable which you will be able to move around in and kick. If you have jewellery you will need to take it off before commencing the class. If you find that you sweat a lot , don’t be ashamed as this is a very healthy and common thing, just be smart about it and bring a change of shirt. There will be breaks during the class where you will have a chance to change shirts if needed. If you have long hair be sure to tie it back. Please come to class well groomed and take into consideration other students comfort. Footwear is generally not used, but if you are required to use it, please use a flat, soft soled, non-marking martial arts type shoe.
Q. How can I pay?
A. Currently we only accept cash payments. There are multiple ATMs located on Crown Street and there is one across the road at the Dicey Riley Hotel. Payments must be made before or on the day of the commencement of the term. Note however that your booking will only be confirmed once a payment is received.
Q. How many people are there per class?
A. This depends on the instructor. We limit our classes depending on the instructors experience to make sure that you get the attention and value you deserve.
Q. When can I join the term?
A. People are only allowed to join the term in the first three weeks of the term. This is because we aim to make our classes very progressive. If you miss the first three weeks you will miss the core learning which makes up the building blocks of the whole term.
Q. I missed a class, can I make it up?
A. Yes. You can make up to two classes per term. You can make up a class you missed with a class on another time as long as it is a beginner or a level below the class you missed, and there is enough space in the other class, e.g. if you missed the Monday intermediates, than you can make up with a beginners. If you missed an advanced class you can make it up with either a beginners or intermediate class. You will need to let the instructor of the other class know either via email or by text message or phone and wait for them to confirm.
Q. Can I do a casual class?
A. Casual classes are only available in beginners or the levels below which you train at. If you are doing an intermediate class you can only do casual beginners. If you are doing the advanced class then you can do either the beginners or intermediates at an advanced level. You will need to let the instructor of the class you wish to participate in know either via email or by text message or phone and wait for them to confirm.
Q. How many times a week should I train?
A. Most people train a minimum of 2 times a week. We suggest beginners only train twice a week to start of with to allow your body to adjust to the demands which Capoeira places on it as well as give you a chance to balance the rest of your life. Intermediates and advanced are encouraged to train as much as possible, whilst been smart and listening to their body. Always be sure to have at least one day a week were you rest and don’t do any strenuous physical activity.
Q. How do I progress to Intermediate?
A. This is dependent on you and how much you are training. If you are training twice a week, are always on time and don’t miss any classes you’ll to be able to progress to intermediates after two terms. If you’re only training once a week it’ll usually take three or four terms.
The instructor will make an assessment through out the course of the term and let you know how you are progressing. If you feel that you are not getting enough feedback, please feel free to have a chat with them as it may just be that they haven’t gotten to you. All the instructors want to make sure that you are progressing so please don’t hesitate to talk to them.
Q. I’ve injured myself what should I do?
A. See a professional physician straight away and if possible let us know about it. Once your physician gives you the go ahead to come back to class take your time and allow your body to adjust slowly. Be sure to either come to class early or make some time to let your instructor know what they should be aware of.
I’ve trained in the past at another school/group/club and am not sure what level class I should do?
Our instructors will conduct an assessment during one of our free intro classes’ pre-term. This is to asses you level of experience, your level of fitness as well as to see what the differences are in how you’ve learnt to how we teach.
Q. Can I just learn to do a back flip?
A. Flips and summersaults are a part of Capoeira which only the most advanced practitioners attempt. They take quite a lot of time and commitment to be able to master safely. In the general classes we will give you groundings to get your physical and technical ability so you can master any all facets of Capoeira however it will take time. If you are looking to learn a backflip in a very shot period of time your best bet is to get some private lessons or to join a gymnastics club.
Q. Will Capoeira make my sex life better?
A. Yes….Just joking! This depends on many factors and Capoeira can play a part in improving it.
